How to Build an App with AI in 2026: A Step-by-Step Guide

AI coding agents can now write most of an app for you. Here is the process we use to go from idea to App Store, and where beginners usually get stuck.

AI changed who can build apps

Two years ago, building a mobile app meant learning Swift or Kotlin, or paying a team. Today, AI coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex and Cursor can read your project, write whole features, run the build and fix their own errors. The skill that matters most has shifted from typing code to describing clearly what you want and checking that you got it.

We have built more than a dozen iOS, Android and web apps this way at GET Technologies, from Goby AI, a food label scanner, to puzzle games like Fourfold. This guide is the condensed version of that process.

Step 1: Pick an idea you can ship in weeks

Your first app should do one thing well. Look at the App Store and Google Play for apps in your idea's category, read their one- and two-star reviews, and write down what users keep complaining about. That list is your feature plan.

  • →One core action a user can complete in under a minute
  • →A clear reason someone would come back tomorrow
  • →A simple way to make money: subscription, one-time unlock or ads

Step 2: Choose your stack and tools

For iPhone-only apps, native SwiftUI gives the best results and AI tools know it well. For iOS and Android from one codebase, Flutter or React Native (Expo) work well. For web apps, Next.js is the most common choice and pairs well with v0 for quick interfaces.

Then pick an AI coding agent that can work across your whole project, not just autocomplete a line. Agents that can run your build and read the errors save hours of copy-pasting.

Step 3: Write a short product brief before any code

AI tools do their best work when they know the goal. Before the first prompt, write half a page: who the app is for, the main screens, what data it stores, and what 'done' looks like for version one. Give that brief to the agent at the start of every session.

Step 4: Build one feature at a time and test as you go

Ask for one screen or feature at a time, run it on a simulator or your phone, and only move on when it works. Small steps make mistakes easy to spot and undo. Commit your work with Git after every working step so you can always roll back.

  • →Start with navigation and the core screen
  • →Add saving data, then settings and onboarding
  • →Add widgets, notifications and polish last

Step 5: Add AI features without leaking your keys

If your app calls an AI model, never put the API key inside the app. Anyone can extract it. Route requests through a small server or edge function that holds the key and checks that requests come from your real app. That is how our AI apps, like Goby AI and Ned, are set up.

Step 6: Publish to the App Store and Google Play

Publishing is where many first-time builders stall. You will need developer accounts, screenshots, a privacy policy, data safety forms and, on Google Play, a closed testing period. Apple may reject apps that look too similar to others, so make sure your app has a clear, distinct purpose and design.
